Steeped in scenery, culture and history, the Bodrum peninsula is now easy to get to from an airport opened in 1998 and well served by a 24-hour network of dolmus buses that link even the small resorts to the bustling town of Bodrum. The arrival of the airport means that the area has become far more developed than it was as recently as the mid 1990s.
Bodrum is a major resort in its own right, dominated by a well preserved Crusader castle, The town of Bodrum still retains the flavour of a real Turkish town, albeit one full of night clubs and a great range of restaurants. In addition, there's excellent late night shopping and a large outdoor market every Thursday.
Food: As one of Turkey's Big Three resort towns, Bodrum offers a full range of eating options at all hours of the day and night.
Nightlife: The liveliest in Turkey, Bodrum boasts Halikarnas -- claimed to be the biggest open air night club in the world, together with a host of competing establishments stretched along the harbour front, including one that's based on an enormous catamaran that sets sail at 3am and returns around 5am.
Shopping: Not only does Bodrum offer pretty much all-night late-night shopping, but it has an extensive open air market on Thursdays. Take advantage of the very reasonable prices for Turkish carpets, kilims, leather goods and 'fake' designer-label clothing.
Days out: Take the time to go around the Crusader Castle - it's been well developed as a museum, with plenty of excellent exhibits and shady courtyards; history buffs may find the long drive to the ancient Roman city of Ephesus rewarding; for a fun day out there's a modern aquapark at Dedeman, near Ortakent.
Events: The Bodrum Festival takes place in September, and features events staged at the restored open-air Roman theatre to the north of the town centre.
